Transition Mass
Starting a new school can be an exciting time, but also a little scary! In order to celebrate this new stage in your life, we have a special celebration prior to your arrival in Y7.
Usually, when someone wants to celebrate a special birthday or achievement, they gather around a table to share a special meal. Jesus invites us to share a special meal with Him. This meal is called the Eucharist or Mass.
On Wednesday 6th July, we will gather around the Altar in the John Caden Hall and share the Eucharist together. The theme of our Mass is ‘Here I am. Send me.’ Christians believe that God calls each of us to serve him in different ways.
On this Liturgy website, you will be able to read the readings from the Bible that we will use in the Mass, listen to snippets of the Hymns we will use and prepare yourself for this special celebration.
For some of you, this may be your first experience of the Catholic Mass and so we want you to feel especially comfortable and welcome. You will find information on this site to help you understand the different parts of the Mass and how to be involved within it.
I look forward to meeting you all very soon!

A reading from the First Book of Samuel
In those days, when the boy Samuel was serving the Lord under the direction of Eli, there were very few messages from the Lord, and visions from him were quite rare. 2 One night Eli, who was now almost blind, was sleeping in his own room; Samuel was sleeping in the sanctuary, where the sacred Covenant Box was. Before dawn, while the lamp was still burning, the Lord called Samuel. He answered, “Yes, sir!” and ran to Eli and said, “You called me, and here I am.”
But Eli answered, “I didn't call you; go back to bed.” So Samuel went back to bed.
The Lord called Samuel again. The boy did not know that it was the Lord, because the Lord had never spoken to him before. So he got up, went to Eli, and said, “You called me, and here I am.”
But Eli answered, “My son, I didn't call you; go back to bed.
The Lord called Samuel a third time; he got up, went to Eli, and said, “You called me, and here I am.”
Then Eli realized that it was the Lord who was calling the boy, 9 so he said to him, “Go back to bed; and if he calls you again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed.
The Lord came and stood there, and called as he had before, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Samuel answered, “Speak; your servant is listening.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark+
Glory to You, O Lord
After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)
Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

What is the Mass?
The Mass is when we do what Jesus did at the Last Supper. Catholics believe that through the power of the Holy Spirit, the bread and Wine transform into Jesus’ actual Body and Blood through the words of Consecration.
The first part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word and this is when we listen carefully to what God is trying to say to us. We think about the readings and try to relate them to our own lives. We offer prayers for the world, our College community, our family and friends and ourselves.
The second part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Eucharist and this is when we offer to God our whole lives and when the priest offers the gifts of bread and wine on the Altar. These gifts become for us the Body and Blood of Jesus through transubstantiation.
